This Day in Top 40 History: January 30

Phil Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in London, England, to June and Greville Collins. He has had an impressive music career, with two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200: *No Jacket Required* and *…But Seriously*. He also scored at least seven No. 1 hits in the U.S. Some other notable artists born on January 30 include Kid Cudi and the late Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane.

January 30 has seen many significant Top 40 releases over the years. In 1995, Simple Minds released their tenth studio album, *Good News From The Next World*. While it didn’t make the Top 40 in the U.S., it reached No. 2 in the U.K. and produced two Top 20 hits. In 1996, Ministry launched their sixth album, *Filthy Pig*, which peaked at No. 19 in the U.S. with several notable singles.

In 2007, Norah Jones released her third album, *Not Too Late*, which topped the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K., despite not having any Top 40 singles. Then in 2017, Bruno Mars released “That’s What I Like” from his album *24K Magic*, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent over 50 weeks on the chart.

Culturally, January 30 has its moments too. In 1994, Natalie Cole sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XXVIII, adding a unique twist to her performance. In 2025, a FireAid benefit concert took place in Los Angeles to support victims of California wildfires, featuring stars like Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga.

These events have shaped Top 40 history in many ways, making January 30 a notable date in music.
