Greg Brown, the original guitarist for Cake, has passed away after a brief illness. The band shared the sad news on Facebook, expressing their deep sorrow. They did not disclose his age.
“Greg was a key part of CAKE’s early sound and development,” the post said. “His creative contributions were immense, and we will miss him both musically and personally. Godspeed, Greg.”
Brown was with Cake from the beginning when the band was formed in 1991 by frontman John McCrea. He played on their debut album, *Motorcade of Generosity*, released in 1994, and their hit 1996 album, *Fashion Nugget*, which featured the popular song “The Distance,” written by Brown.
He left the band in 1997 but reunited briefly to contribute to a track on their 2011 album, *Showroom of Compassion*.
