Marshall has introduced a special amp for Billie Joe Armstrong just in time for Green Day’s performance at Super Bowl LX on February 8. The event took place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. This unique pale blue Marshall 1959 Super Lead head and cabinet features the Dookie mod and has Armstrong’s signature etched on a brass plate.
Marshall shared a short clip on Instagram showcasing the amp. The brass plate on the front identifies it as the Dookie 1959 / BJA Super Lead signature model. The power-blue Tolex covering complements the fawn grille cloth and white piping. Marshall confirmed the launch on social media with captions like “Green Day showing the world how to keep it loud!” However, the amps are not yet available on Marshall’s official site or through retailers, and there’s no word on when they will be released.
The Dookie mod enhances the original Marshall Super Lead by adding a master volume control. This modification was done by Martin Golub on Armstrong’s original amp, known as Pete, a 100-watt Marshall Plexi 1959SLP. The mod repurposed the High Treble volume for master control and turned the Normal Volume into the gain, creating the sound heard on the band’s 1994 album. The new signature model features red labels above the knobs to indicate the modified controls. Similar modifications are available from Chicago Amp Mods for $220 to $250.
During their short set before Bad Bunny’s halftime show, the band played “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and other hits. Armstrong used his new amps with his beloved Fernandes S-style guitar, named Blue, which he has had since the band’s early days. Fans are eagerly asking, “When are these launching?”
In 2019, MXR released the Dookie Drive pedal to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album, and they have since released updated versions in 2023.
