Gorillaz Talks About Failed Netflix Movie Project: ‘Not Interested’
Gorillaz has opened up about their failed movie project with Netflix. Jamie Hewlett, the band’s co-creator, shared that they have no plans for a future film. “If we’d done a movie 25 years ago, that would have been fine, but now? No interest at all,” he said on The Zane Lowe Show.
Hewlett explained that they had a chance to work with Netflix, where they were told they could do anything they wanted with a big budget. “We had some great ideas, but things were moving too slowly. The person we were working with left, and they said they would find someone else. We realized it would take another year just to get started, so we decided to pull out,” he added.
Damon Albarn, the band’s frontman, described the experience as feeling like “waiting forever.” Instead of a movie, Gorillaz used that time to create new music. They released their album, *Cracker Island*, in 2023, followed by another record, *The Mountain*, which came out in February.
While a full-length Gorillaz movie may not happen, fans can enjoy a short film that accompanies three songs from *The Mountain*.
