Joey Graceffa Reveals 'The Amazing Race' Producer Wanted Him to Come Out On the Show

Joey Graceffa is opening up about his time on The Amazing Race.

The 34-year-old YouTuber and author competed on season 22, which aired in 2013, and season 24 (All Stars), which aired in 2014, alongside friend and fellow YouTuber Meghan Camarena, aka Strawburry17.

In a new interview, Joey revealed that while he was on the show, there was a producer that urged him to come out on the show, and he says he would’ve done it under one condition.

The Amazing Race was a lot of fun, but it was truly traumatizing. It’s crazy,” he told Out. “They wanted me to come out on the show! There was a gay producer who was like, ‘You should come out on the show.’ I was like, ‘I’ll come out if you write me that $1 million check at the finish line!’ That didn’t happen. I would not have been ready back then.”

A year after the season 24 finale, Joey did come out publicly in May 2015 with a music video, “Don’t Wait,” where he kissed his co-star Daniel Preda, who he was secretly dating at the time. A few days later, his debut memoir, “In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World,” released, and there’s a chapter in it where he fully confirms his sexuality.

Chapter 14 is titled, “Surprise!” and the only contents of the chapter read, “I’m gay.”

Last fall, fellow YouTubers that Joey made videos with years ago, confirmed long-standing rumors that they have in fact been dating all this time!
