Deryck Whibley, the frontman of Sum 41, recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of their hit song “Fat Lip.” He took to Instagram to reflect on how the song changed their lives. Whibley shared that creating “Fat Lip” was a long process. He worked on it for over a year before even showing it to the band.
At first, he felt embarrassed about the song. It took a lot of effort to piece everything together and make it sound cohesive. Whibley mentioned that the breakthrough came when he collaborated with guitarist Dave Baksh and drummer Steve Jocz to write the rap verses. That was when they realized they had created something special that truly represented who they were.
“Fat Lip” was released as a single on April 22, 2001, and quickly climbed to #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. It is also certified double-Platinum by the RIAA. Sum 41 disbanded in 2025 after releasing their final album, “Heaven :x: Hell,” and completing a farewell tour.
