Tom Morello has announced a new solo album, Everyone Gets Everything They Want. It’s due Sept. 25. This will be his fourth full-length record under his own name, and he calls it his first solo rock album.
His earlier solo albums — The Atlas Underground (2018), The Atlas Underground Fire (2021) and The Atlas Underground Flood (2021) — mixed electronic and EDM sounds with heavier music and highlighted guest singers on every track. This new album also has guests. Serj Tankian of System of a Down appears on “Adjourn It,” and metal band Beartooth guests on “Everything Burns.”
The newest single is “Date Night,” and it’s just Morello. The song tells the true story of three young Dutch women — sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen and their friend Hannie Schaft — who resisted the Nazis in World War II. They used their youth to move past checkpoints, smuggle weapons, sabotage rail lines, help Jewish children escape, and even lure and kill Nazi officers as part of the underground resistance.
Morello says: “I make anti-racist songs for anti-racists. I make anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists. And I make anti-Nazi songs for anti-Nazis. ‘Date Night’ is really a ‘which side are you on?’ song. If any of that offends you, do the math.”
He’ll also host the Power to the People Festival on Oct. 3 in Columbia, Maryland.
