Rhino High Fidelity has officially released reel-to-reel audio tape editions of Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album and their 1970 follow-up, Paranoid. Available exclusively at Rhino.com starting Saturday, Aug. 29, the release is strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide. The tapes were duplicated in real time from 1:1 copies of the U.S. analog master recordings using 15 i.p.s. half-track 1/4-inch tape housed on 10.5-inch metal reels.
The release honors the early output of the Birmingham, England band, comprised of Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. Black Sabbath released their debut record in February 1970, followed by Paranoid later that September, yielding classics such as “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” and “N.I.B.” The original four-member lineup played its final show together on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, shortly before Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76.
