The English rock band shifted away from its long-held @muse handle on Instagram and X after Meta unveiled a new AI agent.
English rock band Muse has updated its social media handles, transitioning to @museband on Instagram and @musetheband on X. The trio had previously used the handle @muse across platforms for over a decade, having maintained accounts on X since 2008 and Instagram since 2012, alongside TikTok and Facebook. The change follows Meta’s Tuesday launch of a personal AI agent using the handle @muse. Although fan activity indicated handle changes as early as June, the exact circumstances behind the transition remain unclear.
Social media users highlighted the irony of the situation, given Muse’s history of writing songs about technological takeovers on albums such as 2015’s Drones and 2018’s Simulation Theory. Meta has previously acquired desirable handles from existing owners during major releases, including the @Meta handle from a motorcycle magazine in 2021 and the @threads handle from a fashion retailer in 2023. Muse, who trademarked their band name in 1999, released their tenth studio album, The Wow! Signal, in June and is scheduled to tour the UK and Europe starting in November, including a concert at London’s O2 Arena.
