In an interview with Bulgaria’s Z-Rock, Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan shared his philosophy on creating timeless music, advising artists to avoid chasing trends. Gillan noted that while some groups achieve success following commercial trends—pointing to ABBA as a prime example—trying to fit popular fashion can be a struggle. He emphasized that musicians stand a better chance at longevity by remaining true to themselves, as an authentic approach results in an honest performance with lasting appeal.
Gillan’s remarks come as Deep Purple promotes its latest studio album, SPLAT!, which was released on July 3 and produced by Bob Ezrin. Formed in 1968 and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, the band’s current lineup features Gillan alongside founding drummer Ian Paice, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Don Airey, and guitarist Simon McBride.
