Halsey, Lil Nas X, Elton John And More Earn Nominations For GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD has announced nominees for the 2022 GLAAD Media Awards, which celebrates LGBTQ representation in film, television, music and other media.

The LGBTQ advocacy organization announced the nominations for the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards today (January 19).

For the awards’ long-running outstanding music artist, a category that celebrates LGBTQ artists and allies who use their platforms to promote LGBTQ acceptance through their albums, 10 artists — Halsey, Lil Nas X, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Brockhampton, Demi Lovato Kaytranada, Melissa Etheridge, Mykki Blanco, and St. Vincent — received nominations for their releases in 2021. Sam Smith receive the award in 2021 for their album Love Goes.

In the newer category of outstanding breakthrough music artist, which was introduced in 2021 and celebrates LGBTQ artists who saw major advancements in their careers over the past year, 10 more artists — Girl in Red, Arlo Parks, Joy Oladokun, Lauren Jauregui, Asiahn, Jake Wesley Rogers, Japanese Breakfast, Lily Rose, Lucy Dacus and Vincint — received nominations. Chika won the first-ever outstanding breakthrough music artist award in 2021.

The awards also honor films, television shows, video games, journalism and more for their contributions to LGBTQ visibility. Amongst the nominees are shows including RuPaul’s Drag Race, Sex Education and Pose, and films such as Eternals, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Tick, Tick … Boom!

“Media can create positive change and this year’s nominees represent powerful projects, stories, and creators that positively shifted culture and enlightened audiences with new and impactful LGBTQ stories,” GLAAD president & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “There are more nominees this year than ever before, highlighting a growing landscape of LGBTQ visbility, and serving as a reminder to the critical role that film, television, music, journalism, and other forms of media can play in growing LGBTQ acceptance in the face of ongoing attacks against our community.”

The 33rd annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held at Los Angeles’s Beverly Hilton on Saturday, April 2, and at New York’s Hilton Midtown on Friday, May 6.
