Kurt Cobain’s Guitar From ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ Video Up for Auction

Another major Nirvana artifact is heading toward the auction block.

The 1969 Fender Mustang Competition Lake Placid blue finish electric guitar Kurt Cobain used in the music video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will be part of the upcoming “Music Icons” auction program from Julien’s Auctions.

Per Julien’s, “In honor of the upcoming Mental Health Awareness Month in May, a portion of the proceeds from the auction of this legendary guitar and select Kurt Cobain items will benefit ‘Kicking The Stigma,’ the Indianapolis Colts and the Jim Irsay family’s national initiative to raise awareness about mental health disorders and to remove the stigma too often associated with these illnesses.”

The guitar is estimated to sell between $600,000-$800,000, but don’t be surprised if the final selling price is substantially higher. In June 2020, Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E Acoustic-Electric guitar he played during Nirvana’s episode of MTV Unplugged was estimated to sell for $1 million. The acoustic guitar sold for a staggering $6,010,000 million setting new world records for World’s Most Expensive Guitar, World’s Most Expensive Acoustic Guitar, World’s Most Expensive Martin Guitar, World’s Most Expensive Piece of Memorabilia and World’s Most Expensive Nirvana Memorabilia.

Julien’s Auctions “Music Icons” program is taking place May 20-22 with full details available at JuliensAuctions.com.
