ON THIS DAY: The Dave Matthews Band Caravan in Atlantic City, NJ

The Dave Matthews Band (DMB) headlined a series of concert festivals call the Dave Matthews Band Caravan during the summer of 2011. The band decided that the festivals would take the place of their usual summer tour. The first festival took place at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Atlantic City festival featured three main stages, with the DMB headlining each night. The lineup also included several other popular bands, including The Flaming Lips, David Gray, Ray Lamontagne, O.A.R., Damian Marley, Dr. Dog, Thievery Corporation, Amos Lee, Warren Haynes Band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Fitz and the Tantrums, Guster and about 20 other musical acts.

Dave Matthews Band Caravan

Close to 75,000 fans enjoyed a wide variety of music over the 3-day weekend. Without a doubt, the outcome thrilled Atlantic City and the organizers.

Each night after the Caravan let out, there was a series of late night “after parties” held at various venues and casinos on the boardwalk, including a series of late shows at the House of Blues at the Showboat. Some of the late-night performers included G Love, Tim Reynolds & The Flaming Lips.

The other stops on the Dave Matthews Caravan that year also included a 3-day festival in Lakeside, Chicago July 8th-10th, The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State over Labor Day weekend (September 2nd-4th) and Randall’s Island in New York (September 16th-18th).

A Huge Success

The Dave Matthews Band Caravan was one undoubtedly of the greatest festivals I have ever attended. The bands were great, the fans were great, and Atlantic City was the perfect backdrop for the weekend’s events. DMB later released Live in Atlantic City with most of the tracks from the 3rd day of the Caravan. They also had some really cool posters made for each day of the weekend. However, quantities were extremely limited, and I was only able to get the 3rd day. (pictured).

WMMR welcomes Dave Matthews Band back to the area July 21st & 22nd 2023 at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. Tickets are on sale now!
