Jimmy Buffett’s cause of death was reportedly skin cancer, according to TMZ. Jimmy was diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago that turned into lymphoma; a “close friend” told TMZ, “He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively.” Buffett began receiving hospice care last Monday, and there was an outpouring of love from friends and family. It’s reported that a week ago, Sir Paul McCartney came to Jimmy’s house and sang to his family.
Buffett died at age 76.
Country superstar Kenny Chesney posted to Instagram a video of himself sitting on a beach in Key West playing guitar and singing Jimmy’s song “A Pirate Looks At Forty.” He also posted a video clip of him and Buffett performing “Margaritaville” on stage. He captioned the post, “So goodbye Jimmy. Thanks for your friendship and the songs I will carry in my heart forever. Sail On Sailor.”
Alan Jackson posted a photo of himself with Buffett, winning their CMA Award for Single of the Year for “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” on Instagram. He wrote, “Shores distant shores, There’s where I’m headed for, I got the stars to guide my way, Sail into the light of day…” #BoatsToBuild.”

Buffett’s official social media accounts posted the sad news earlier this morning (9/2). “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st, surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
