Power Trip Night Three: Metallica & Tool Setlists/Recap

Power Trip came to a close Sunday night (October 8) in Indio, Calif. with two of hard rock and metal’s greatest bands: Metallica and Tool.

Tool took to the stage first delivering a nearly two-hour set of 12 songs. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Power Trip attendees may not have been prepared for Tool’s brand of hard rock. The outlet noted of Tool’s set, “It was heady stuff for the sun-dazed Power Trip crowd, with many attendees in the general admission section opting to sit on blankets or chairs as they waited politely for Metallica. Still, they applauded heartily between songs, due in no small part to a spectacular light show full of lasers and abstract, occasionally unsettling visuals.”

Metallica took to the Power Trip stage about an hour after Tool’s set, per Setlist.fm. The band’s setlist had few deep cuts, unlike the setlists on Metallica’s current world tour. However, in the middle of all of the major hits and fan favorites, Metallica had two songs from their latest album, 72 Seasons: “Lux Æterna” and “Too Far Gone?”

The set also featured guitarist Kirk Hammett flubbing the intro to “Nothing Else Matters,” which he went viral for back in May 2022 at Boston Calling and on the opening night of Metallica’s North American leg of their current tour. If anything, it just shows that even rock stars can still make mistakes, even when it comes to songs that are over 30 years old.
