Oxymoron debuted at #1 on Billboard’s top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and sold 139,000 copies in its first week of release. The album was supported with four singles: “Collard Greens,” “Man of the Year,” “Studio,” and “Hell of a Night.” “Studio” remains the rapper’s highest-charting single, having peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2016, the album earned a platinum RIAA Certification, meaning over a million units were sold in the U.S.

Released under Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records, Oxymoron was ScHoolboy Q’s first major label release and third album overall. The record features production from from Pharrell, Boi-1da, Mike Will Made It, and The Alchemist, as well as collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, ASAP Rocky, Jay Rock, Tyler, the Creator, and Kurupt. He explained the story behind the album title to New York radio station Hot 97, saying, “The oxymoron in this album is that I’m doing all this bad to do good for my daughter. That’s why I’m robbin’. That’s why I’m stealin’…..Whatever it is that I’m talking about in my album [that’s] negative, it’s always for a good cause, for my daughter.”

At the time of its original release, Q shared that he believed it was his best work, and hoped it would be considered a classic. “It’s a classic album I would like to say, but I would like the people to say it’s a classic. But in my eyes it’s a crazy album…I’m really proud of myself for this record.”
