Bob Marley’s ‘Punky Reggae Party’ Gets A Brand New Video

Island/UMe have shared a new video for Bob Marley’s “Punky Reggae Party,” a track originally released as the B-side of “Jamming” in 1977. The song is available in its extra-rare 12-inch dub version on the 2024 limited edition of Bob Marley’s Exodus.

The video was directed by Cameroonian graphic artist Maxime Manga, whose main medium is digital collage. The clip seamlessly combines animation with classic photos of Marley and footage from a Boston concert in 1978 to bring the song to life.

Bob Marley has been on many minds recently thanks to the 2024 film Bob Marley: One Love, which follows the reggae star’s life in and out of the spotlight. The film is now available on all streaming platforms and on DVD and Blu-Ray.

To celebrate the opening of the blockbuster biopic, Island/UMe unveiled the Exodus Limited Edition LP earlier this month. It features the album in its original cover design as seen in the film, along with an exclusive 10” LP of rare bonus tracks and an essay by Jamaican historian Herbie Miller. For the first time, this all-new package is also encased in a gatefold design.Released on vinyl for the first time in decades, the 10” includes dub versions of “Exodus,” “Jamming,” and “Punky Reggae Party” – plus the rare “Roots,” first issued as the B-side of “Waiting In Vain.”

Cited by Time Magazine as the Best Album of the 20th Century (“Every song is a classic, from the messages of love to the anthems of revolution”) and the BBC as the “album that defined the 20th Century,” the legacy of Exodus extends beyond genres, eras, and continents.

“Exodus is a timeless document that publicly reveals the contemplations and reflections on the life of one of the 20th century’s most revered artists and revolutionaries,” Miller writes in the new liner notes. “It shows Bob’s fears and vulnerability, his steadfast commitment to making humanity as equitable and ideal as imaginable and spreading his Rastafari spirituality to the four corners of the earth.”
