The Cranberries and CHVRCHES’ Iain Cook Share ‘Linger’ Remix

The Cranberries are celebrating over 30 years of their beloved hit single “Linger” with a collaborative remix courtesy of CHVRCHES Iain Cook. The “Linger [Iain Cook Remix]” is the first collaborative reimagining of the track and is the first collaboration of any kind from The Cranberries in six years. The Cranberries’ Fergal Lawler plays drums on the song.

Lawler recently stopped by the “Curva Mundial” podcast to discuss the legacy of The Cranberries and his passion for the Irish National football team. Lawler also spoke about the band’s 1993 debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, which topped the UK charts and was a commercial success. That album’s second single, “Linger,” was the band’s first major hit, reaching No. 3 in the band’s native Ireland, No. 8 in the U.S. and No. 14 in the UK.

“‘Linger’ was the first song we wrote,” vocalist Dolores O’Riordan later recalled. “Initially, it was just a chord shape, with no real melody or lyrics. I took a tape of it home and came up with a verse and chorus. I wrote about being rejected. I never imagined that it would become a big song.”

O’Riordan died suddenly in 2018. The band had been working on a new album, In the End, which would be their eighth and final record. The album included the singles “Wake Me When It’s Over,” “All Over Now,” and the title track, which was the last song written before O’Riordan’s death. Upon release in 2019, In the End cracked the Top 10 of the UK Official Charts, the Billboard Independent Albums chart, and the Billboard Top Alternative Albums chart. The record was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

In 2021, The Cranberries released Remembering Dolores, a compilation album. Earlier this year, the band shared the Wrapped Around Your Finger EP, which included “Linger.”

Last year, CHVRCHES celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut The Bones of What You Believe with a reissue featuring previously unheard songs and live recordings. The band’s Lauren Mayberry has released several solo tracks including “Shame” and “Are You Awake?”
