Liana Flores Shares Debut LP, ‘Flower of the Soul’

Liana Flores has released her debut album, Flower of the Soul. The London-based British-Brazilian artist blends elements of British folk, classic jazz and Brazilian pop to create a singular sound. Flower of the Soul is out now via Verve Records and is available on all formats, including limited-edition ‘summer berry’ vinyl.

The release is accompanied by a bilingual lyric video for album centerpiece “Butterflies,” which features the Latin Grammy Nominee Tim Bernardes of Brazilian rock band O Terno. “’Butterflies’ is a bossa nova expressing a state of in between-ness when one phase of life ends and another begins,” Flores says of the track. “It was an honour to be joined by Tim Bernardes, whose vocals and guitar playing are a beautiful addition to the track.”

Flores says of the album, “Flower of the Soul explores themes of nature and impermanence, the tension & connection between humans and the natural world, and what changes and remains throughout times of transformation.” The record also features the critically-acclaimed singles “Nightvisons,” “Orange-coloured day,” and “I wish for the rain.” The latter features Christopher Bear (Grizzly Bear) on drums and was produced and mixed by Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Natalia Lafourcade).

Flores has described “I wish for the rain” as the record’s “torch song,” saying that, “the song arose from a walk home one night in the height of summer; it was a time of heartbreak and I couldn’t help but think of how welcoming a little rain can be for rumination.”

Flores will celebrate the release of Flower of the Soul with a sold out in-store performance at Rough Trade NYC and run of Rough Trade in-stores across the UK this July. Later this year, Flores will head out on a North American tour with stops in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, before a series of shows in the UK and EU.
