“I Kissed A Girl” has joined the Spotify Billions Club. Katy Perry’s 2008 breakthrough single headlined her sophomore record, One of the Boys. Perry has said that the song is “about the magical beauty of a woman,” as indicated by the catchy chorus: “I kissed a girl and I liked it/The taste of her cherry chapstick.”

“I Kissed A Girl” was co-written by Perry, Max Martin, Cathay Dennis, and producer Dr. Luke, with additional production from Benny Blanco. The track topped the Billboard 100 for seven consecutive weeks and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Perry once told the BBC, “The chorus actually popped into my head when I woke up. It was one of those moments where you hear artists talking about songs they get in dreams or in the middle of the night.”

One of the Boys arrived seven years after Perry’s debut, Katy Hudson. A promotional track titled “Ur So Gay” previewed One of the Boys’ playful sense of humor and knack for strong hooks. One of the Boys would go on to reach No. 9 on the Billboard 200.

Perry followed up One of the Boys with 2010’s massive, chart-topping Teenage Dream.

The track is Perry’s eighth song to join the Spotify Billions Club. Back in November, “Hot N Cold,” also off One of the Boys, achieved the milestone. Perry’s other songs in the club are the Juicy J collaboration “Dark Horse,” the Calvin Harris/Pharrell Williams/Big Sean team-up “Feels,” “Roar,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Firework,” and “The One That Got Away.” “Hot N Cold”’s Alan Ferguson-directed video has also surpassed a billion views on YouTube.
