On April 6, 1974, the group took to the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest in their platform boots to perform the record’s title track and ultimately kickstart their legendary career in pop music. They won that night in Brighton, England, with 24 points, beating out another iconic artist: the U.K.’s entry Olivia Newton-John.

Order The Waterloo 50th Anniversary Reissue

In March 1974, only a month before their historic win, the Swedish foursome released their second studio album, Waterloo. Now, the Waterloo album is being reissued as a Half-Speed mastered 45RPM 2LP Vinyl, along with a limited edition box set of the three vinyl singles originally released by Polar in 1974; the singles are also available as separate picture discs. Not only that, but they’re also releasing a unique 10-inch vinyl disc featuring Waterloo” in four different languages and a new line of anniversary apparel taking it back to the 1970s.

When Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad released their second album, they were met with a new level of success. Up to that point, no other album had sold as many copies in the group’s home country. The single Waterloo” was followed up by another album track, “Honey, Honey,” which Mamma Mia!  fans will remember Amanda Seyfried singing in one of the film’s early scenes. The album also included “Hasta Mañana,” an emotional ballad that almost became ABBA’s Eurovision entry, and the early 1960s pop-inspired “Dance (While The Music Still Goes On.)”

For ABBA fans in the U.K., there will also be an in-person celebration for Waterloo’s anniversary. Fans can purchase tickets for an Abba-themed silent disco on the roof of London’s famous O2 Arena on April 4th. More information about the event can be found here.
