AC/DC’s Angus Young Supports Band’s Unique Sound: ‘This is Our Greatest Strength’

AC/DC’s Angus Young is proud of the band’s musical style. In a recent interview with The Project TV, he defended their classic rock sound, which has remained consistent for over four decades. Critics often say their music sounds the same, but Young has a simple response. He recalls his brother’s words: “When someone says every album sounds the same, he’d say, ‘Yeah. It’s the same band! We’re not reinventing the wheel. This is what we do best. We make rock and roll.’”

Take their iconic 1979 tracks, “Highway to Hell” and “If You Want Blood.” Both songs deliver a powerful punch, featuring Bon Scott’s raw vocals and heavy blues-inspired guitar riffs. Young highlighted the legendary track “Back in Black,” which started with a riff from his brother Malcolm. He remembers Malcolm playing it for him on a cassette after they had been touring. Malcolm asked if it was any good, and Young jokingly replied, “If you’re going to trash it, give it to me, and I’ll say I wrote it.”

The band caught the attention of music legends early on. Frank Zappa even tried to sign them in the 1970s. His son, Dweezil, noted that Zappa recognized their talent, energy, and authenticity.

When the new wave of music hit in the 1980s, many labels wanted AC/DC to change. But the band stayed true to their roots, even after Brian Johnson took over for Scott following his death. Their 2020 album, Power Up, honors Malcolm Young’s legacy, showcasing his guitar work and songwriting across all 12 tracks recorded before he passed away. AC/DC continues to rock on, staying true to their sound and fans.
