The Andrew Bird Trio, a new project from multi-instrumentalist and singer Andrew Bird, have announced Sunday Morning Put-On: an album featuring unique takes on mid-century jazz classics. The project puts a focus on small group jazz, featuring songs from Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Lerner & Loewe, and Rodgers & Hart. The album’s first two singles, “I Fall In Love Too Easily” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face” are out now. The record will be available May 24th via Loma Vista Recordings.

Playing with Bird and rounding out the trio are Jeff Parker on guitar and Larry Goldings on piano. The record was produced by Bird and recorded completely live in southern California’s legendary Valentine Studios, where Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, and The Beach Boys have all recorded.
For Bird, Sunday Morning Put-On has been a long time coming. He shares, “When I was in my 20s, I lived in an old apartment-hotel in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago… Most Saturday nights I’d stay up listening to a radio show called ‘Blues Before Sunrise’ on WBEZ from 12-4am. The DJ, Steve Cushing, played old rare 78rpm records of blues, jazz and gospel. Then I’d sleep for a few hours and wake to Dick Buckley’s show, also on WBEZ, featuring what he called ‘Golden Era’ jazz from the 30s and 40s. My love for a certain era of jazz up through the mid-20th Century has been constant through many transmutations in my own work, the bulk of which is not jazz at all. Once I had some distance between myself and this time when I was under its spell, I wanted to immerse myself in it again.”
The Andrew Bird Trio will celebrate the release of Sunday Morning Put-On with special performances at Chicago’s Green Mill jazz club on May 29th and Los Angeles’ Lodge Room on June 3rd. Following these shows, Bird will hit the road for his U.S. summer tour.
