Andrew Hill’s ‘Judgment!’ Added to Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series

Pianist-composer Andrew Hill’s 1964 album *Judgment!* is getting a reissue from Blue Note as part of its Classic Vinyl Reissue Series. The album will be available on November 21. This new edition is a stereo, all-analog version, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

*Judgment!* was recorded in 1964 with a talented quartet: Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Richard Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Hill shares insights about the six tracks in the liner notes by Leonard Feather. The opening track, “Siete Ocho,” means “seven eight,” reflecting its time signature. Hill explains that “Flea Flop” is named for the melody’s first notes, which remind him of a jumping flea. He also dedicates it to the hotels and motels where jazz musicians often stay.

“Yokada Yokada” is inspired by the novelty song “Yakety Yak” and features playful dialogue. The second side starts with “Alfred,” a tribute to Blue Note co-founder Alfred Lion, recognizing his deep understanding of jazz and their connection. The title track is based on a ten-bar statement inspired by a poem from Hill’s wife, Laverne. Lastly, Hill describes “Reconciliation” as a reflection on the adjustments musicians make to create unity and harmony.

*Judgment!* is the third classic album Hill recorded during a creative five-month period that also produced *Black Fire* and *Point of Departure*. Earlier this year, Hill’s 1968 album *Andrew!!!* was reissued in Blue Note’s Tone Poet series. It features saxophonist John Gilmore, Hutcherson, Davis, and drummer Joe Chambers.
