To celebrate Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express, which opens in the summer of 2024 in the purpose built Starlight Auditorium at Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, a special collector’s 1LP zoetrope of the Original Cast Recording will be released on June 7. Performances begin on June 8.
Audiences will be immersed inside a world of speed, song, and storytelling as an incredible cast of 40 whizz around and above, performing some of musical theatre’s most beloved songs, including “AC/DC,” “Make Up My Heart,” “Light at the End of the Tunnel,” and the iconic “Starlight Express.” To celebrate, the original cast recording of STARLIGHT EXPRESS will be released on a special collector’s 1LP zoetrope on 7th June and can be pre-ordered now here.
Each side has been designed by zoetrope specialist Drew Tetz and will animate with the rotation of the vinyl when exposed to the right light conditions or captured on your phone.
The original production of Starlight Express opened at Apollo Victoria London on March 27, 1984, and the cast included Stephanie Lawrence, Frances Ruffelle, Jess Shankley, Jeffrey Daniel, and Ray Shell.
As a child’s train set magically comes to life and the engines race to become the fastest in the world, Rusty the steam train has little hope of winning until he is inspired by the legend of the Starlight Express.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, the creative team is helmed by acclaimed director Luke Sheppard (&Juliet, The Little Big Things), set designer Tim Hatley (Back to the Future), video designer Andrzej Goulding (Life of Pi), costume designer Gabriella Slade (Six), lighting designer Howard Hudson (&Juliet) and sound designer Gareth Owen (MJ the Musical), with new orchestrations and musical supervision by Matthew Brind.
