Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez Score SAG Nominations

Awards season is in full swing, and some major pop stars are getting recognition—for their acting chops. Both Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez received Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for their performances this week in Wicked and Emilia Pérez, respectively. For Grande, this is the first time she has been nominated for her individual performance, while it is the first time that Gomez has been nominated for her performance in a film.

In Wicked, Grande portrays Galinda/Glinda, the character known to audiences as The Good Witch from the classic film/novel The Wizard Of Oz. Though previously nominated for a SAG award as part of the ensemble in the 2021 film Don’t Look Up, Wicked is Grande’s first major film role, and she has steadily received critical acclaim for it since the film’s premiere in November 2024. In addition to a bevy of nominations, including a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, Grande has already received the Virtuoso Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Best Supporting Actress from the Hollywood Critic Association, and the Rising Star Award from the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Wicked received four other nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, for the work on the whole ensemble (including Grande), for Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey’s individual performances, and for the film’s stunt work.

Meanwhile, Gomez also earns two nominations at this year’s SAG Awards for her work in two different ensembles. She earns her first film nomination from the organization for her role as Jessi Del Monte in Emilia Pérez. Gomez also earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the film, and won Best Actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, an award she shared with fellow stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Adriana Paz. Gomez also earns her fourth consecutive nomination from the Screen Actors Guild for her work as part of the Only Murders In The Building ensemble, joining Wicked star Jonathan Bailey as the only two actors this year to earn nominations for their work in both television and film.
