Ariana Grande Wipes Her Memory In ‘We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)’ Video

Ariana Grande has shared the music video for “we can’t be friends (wait for your love),” following the release of her new album, eternal sunshine.

The new visual, directed by Christian Breslauer, follows the pop star as Peaches, a woman who signs up to have her memory wiped. As she has nodes attached to her head in a doctor’s room, she retraces scenes from an old relationship, with her ex-partner — played by Evan Peters — disappearing from her mind as she trawls back through their time together.

The concept of the “we can’t be friends” video nods to Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s 2004 movie, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. The film also loosely inspired Grande’s new album, which was released last week (March 8). The record includes the previous single, “yes, and?

Eternal sunshine received praise from publications across the board upon release. “Grande’s latest is a gorgeously exposed journey to the end of her world — or at least what she believes to be the end,” Rolling Stone wrote. “It’s a divorce album that goes through all the stages of grief, and the singer navigates a new beginning with some of the most honest and inventive songs of her career so far.”

“Grande has delivered a commendable body of work that both expands her artistic and sonic horizons in myriad ways,” Billboard added.

A new version of eternal sunshine has since been released, featuring four bonus tracks. The slightly deluxe edition of the album boasts a new version of “supernatural” featuring Troye Sivan, an acoustic take on “imperfect for you,” an acapella version of “true story,” and the previously released team-up with Mariah Carey on “yes, and?”

Grande appeared on Saturday Night Live this weekend (March 9), performing “we can’t be friends” and “imperfect for you.” The star also appeared in a Moulin Rouge sketch alongside the show’s regular cast members and host Josh Brolin.

Buy or stream eternal sunshine (slightly deluxe).
