As Evanescence’s hit song ‘Bring Me to Life’ reaches Diamond status, the band references their early days in their new album.

Evanescence’s 2003 hit “Bring Me to Life” was certified Diamond by the RIAA in June. As that milestone grows the song’s legacy, frontwoman Amy Lee nods to the band’s early years on their new album, Sanctuary.

On the Sanctuary track “Forever Without You,” Lee sings, “This is the last tear fallen / this is the last open door.” Those lines echo the titles of Evanescence’s first two albums: 2003’s Fallen and 2006’s The Open Door. Lee says dropping those phrases into the song signals that she’s about to revisit that time.

“Open door” has been a recurring image for the band. The line “Like open doors?” appears in the opening of “Bring Me to Life.” Lee explains that an open door means a way forward, not being stuck in the past. She adds that the search for freedom has been a theme for her from the start.

Evanescence is currently touring the U.S. in support of Sanctuary.
