Billie Eilish has been confirmed as the first headliner for Glastonbury 2022, topping the Pyramid Stage bill on the festival’s opening night.
The world-conquering teen pop star will be the youngest solo performer to headline Glastonbury in its 52-year history. She will be 20 years and six months old by the time she takes to the stage at Worthy Farm on June 24, 2022.
The youngest musician to headline Glastonbury is Ash’s Mark Hamilton, who was 20 years and three months old when the band was booked to close out the festival in 1997 as a replacement for Steve Winwood. Hamilton’s bandmate Tim Wheeler was also younger than Eilish at the time at 20 years and five months old.
Festival organizer Emily Eavis confirmed Eilish’s booking on social media this morning (October 4). “We couldn’t be happier to announce that the wondrous @billieeilish is headlining the Pyramid on the Friday at next year’s Glastonbury Festival, becoming the youngest solo headliner in our history,” she wrote. “This feels like the perfect way for us to return and I cannot wait!”
It followed the pop star posting a photo on her Instagram Story last night (3) of her wearing a Glastonbury hoodie, captioned: “2022.”
Eilish’s Glastonbury headline set will mark her first UK festival headline performance. She has already headlined festivals in the US including New York’s Governors Ball, Delaware’s Firefly, and Austin’s ACL. The singer has previously performed at Glastonbury once before, making her debut on the festival’s Other Stage to an enormous crowd after being bumped up from the John Peel tent.
Glastonbury 2022 will be the first edition of the festival since 2019, after the 2020 and 2021 events were forced to be canceled because of the pandemic. Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney, and Taylor Swift were announced to headline in 2020 – it is currently unconfirmed whether any of those three will reprise their slots next year.
