Billy Joel Provides Update on His Brain Disorder Diagnosis

Billy Joel is on the mend after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder. The Piano Man recently shared an update, saying he feels good despite the challenges he faces. He explained that while it may sound serious, he’s managing well. “It used to be called water on the brain. Now it’s called hydrocephalus — normal pressure hydrocephalus,” Joel said. “They don’t really know what causes it … I feel fine. My balance sucks. It’s like being on a boat.”

In May, Billy had to cancel some concerts due to his diagnosis. A statement about the cancellations mentioned that his condition worsened after recent performances, affecting his hearing, vision, and balance. Following his doctor’s advice, he is undergoing physical therapy and has been told to take a break from performing while he recovers.

NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull, putting pressure on the brain. It is most common in people over 65 but can often be treated, sometimes even reversed. Treatment usually involves surgery to place a shunt that drains the excess fluid.

Howard Stern, a close friend of Billy’s, provided an update on his show. He reassured fans, saying, “He’s doing fine. He does have issues, but he said, ‘Yeah, you can tell people, you know, I’m not dying.’” Stern emphasized that Billy wants everyone to know he’s dealing with some medical challenges but remains in good spirits.

Fans can look forward to Billy’s return as he focuses on his health and recovery.
