Bobby Hutcherson’s ‘Montara’ Set for Reissue in Blue Note Tone Poet Series

Bobby Hutcherson’s 1975 album *Montara* is the latest addition to Blue Note’s Tone Poet reissue series. You can preorder the new edition now.

*Montara* was recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during two long sessions in 1975. The album features covers of classic tracks like Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” and Eddie Martinez’s “Little Angel,” along with Hutcherson’s original pieces like “Yuyo” and the title track.

Hutcherson was joined in the studio by talented musicians, including Pias Johnson on flute, trumpeters Oscar Brashear and Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonists Ernie Watts and Fred Jackson, Jr., pianist Eddie Cano, guitarist Dennis Budimir, bassists Chuck Domanico and Dave Troncoso, and drummer Harvey Mason. Dale Oehler provided the arrangements for the group.

*Montara* was one of two Blue Note releases from Hutcherson in 1975, following the studio album *Linger Lane*. The Tone Poet Series, launched in 2019, features jazz classics produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray. Each album is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and carefully selected from Blue Note’s rich catalog, which dates back to 1939. The series also includes titles from labels like Pacific Jazz and United Artists.

Hutcherson’s *Montara* joins other greats like Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Duke Ellington, and Chet Baker in the series. This isn’t the first time Hutcherson’s work has been featured; previous reissues include *Oblique*, *The Kicker*, and *Dialogue*, showcasing his rare sessions from the 1960s.
