Brent Hinds, the former guitarist of Mastodon, has sadly passed away at the age of 51. The band shared the news on Instagram, expressing their deep sadness and grief. They revealed that Hinds died in a tragic motorcycle accident involving a BMW SUV that failed to yield.
Mastodon wrote, “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 with drummer Brann Dailor, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and bassist Troy Sanders. This lineup remained intact for many years, creating music that resonated with fans. However, in March 2025, the band announced they had “mutually decided to part ways” with Hinds. At that time, they expressed pride in their shared history and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Hinds hinted at some tension after his departure, making critical comments about his former bandmates on social media.
In addition to his work with Mastodon, Hinds was involved in other projects, including Fiend Without a Face, Legend of the Seagullmen, and Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, which features Alice in Chains’ William DuVall.
Fans and fellow musicians are mourning the loss of a talented artist who made a significant impact on the metal scene.
