Chris Martin Discusses Boston Concert, Labels It a ‘Debacle’

Coldplay’s Chris Martin recently turned a potential disaster into a brilliant marketing moment. He addressed the infamous Jumbotron incident from a Boston concert during the band’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in Kingston upon Hull, England.

In case you missed it, the spotlight fell on Astronomer’s CEO Andy Byron and HR Executive Kristin Cabot for all the wrong reasons during the Boston show. While performing, Martin took a moment to read fan signs from the crowd. One fan, who had attended the Boston concert, held up a sign saying they had seen the band “three times in three months.” Martin responded, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”

He continued, “We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] for a long time, and it’s only recently that it became a… yeah. Life throws you lemons, and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we want to meet some of you.”

When Martin spotted Byron and Cabot on the screen, he joked, “Look at these two.” After they quickly tried to hide, he quipped, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” He added, “Holy s–t. I hope we didn’t do something bad.” Following the incident, both Byron and Cabot resigned from their positions at Astronomer.

In response to the viral moment, Liam Gallagher of Oasis told fans at a Manchester show that there would be no cameras in the audience. He encouraged fans to enjoy themselves without worrying about being filmed, saying, “It doesn’t matter to us who you’re mingling with.”

It’s clear that both bands are keeping the fun alive, even in the face of unexpected moments!
