Afrika Bambaataa, a foundational figure in the birth of hip-hop, died in Pennsylvania yesterday, April 9, at the age of 68. His lawyer confirmed that the cause of death was prostate cancer. Born Lance Taylor in the South Bronx, Bambaataa became a towering figure in the 1970s and 80s, helping to shape the burgeoning electro-funk and hip-hop movements. He is most widely recognized for his 1982 masterpiece "Planet Rock" and for using his influence to resolve local gang conflicts through the formation of the Universal Zulu Nation art collective.

Bambaataa’s legacy is as influential as it is complex. While credited with introducing beat breaks and the Roland TR-808 drum machine to the genre, his later years were marred by numerous allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1980s. Despite his steadfast denials, these accusations led to a public apology from the Universal Zulu Nation in 2016. Nevertheless, his impact on global music culture remains undeniable, with his talent agency noting that "everything hip hop is today, it is because of him."

Evanescence has officially confirmed that their highly anticipated sixth studio album, titled Sanctuary, will be released on June 5, 2026, through BMG. The announcement comes after years of work, with the band sharing that they are "so damn proud of every second" of the new record.
