Dave Grohl discusses Foo Fighters’ drummer change: ‘It wasn’t an overnight decision’

Dave Grohl has opened up about Foo Fighters’ decision to part ways with drummer Josh Freese in 2025. Freese joined the band in 2023 after the passing of Taylor Hawkins. In a recent interview, Grohl praised Freese as a “consummate professional” and shared that the band had a great time touring with him.

After wrapping up their last tour with Freese in 2024, Grohl and the band took a few months off. During this break, they discussed their future and decided to bring in a new drummer. “This didn’t happen overnight; it was six or seven months,” Grohl explained. “We talked about what to do next and the new direction we wanted to take.”

Grohl emphasized that the decision to move on was a group effort. “We all called Josh together,” he said. “We told him, ‘That was awesome, thank you so much, but we’re going to find another drummer.'”

While Grohl didn’t specify why they felt the need to make a change, he referenced a comment Freese made in an interview, saying, “Josh mentioned that our music didn’t really resonate with him, and that’s really important.”

Grohl also expressed excitement about their new drummer, Ilan Rubin, saying, “We feel like a band again.”

Foo Fighters are set to release a new album titled *Your Favorite Toy*, their first with Rubin, on April 24. Fans can look forward to fresh music from the band soon!
