Deftones Lead Singer Chino Moreno Reveals How Sobriety Transformed His Songwriting Process

Chino Moreno credits three years of sobriety for changing how he writes songs and thinks. The Deftones’ lead singer shared his experience while discussing the band’s latest album, *Private Music*. He emphasized the importance of processing emotions with a clear mind. “You don’t go to therapy once and learn how to not feel a certain way,” Moreno said. “You’ve still got to work through stuff, but doing it with a clear head is a game changer.”

One standout track, “My Mind Is a Mountain,” was inspired by a children’s self-help book. Interestingly, Moreno hadn’t read the book when he first chose the title. Later, he found that its message resonated with his own struggles. “The book teaches kids about their emotions and that it’s okay to feel ups and downs. That’s something I’ve been working on since I got sober,” he explained. He noted that mental work is ongoing, but clarity makes it easier.

Moreno decided to quit drinking three years ago during a tough time. He opened a beer in his garage, and when his wife walked in and asked what he was doing, he realized it was time for a change.

The Deftones released *Private Music* in August, marking their 10th studio album. It debuted at No. 5 on the charts, making it the seventh time one of their albums has reached the top 10.

Looking ahead, Deftones will host the sixth edition of their festival in San Diego and have a full arena tour planned for Europe and the UK in early 2026. Fans can look forward to more great music and live shows from this iconic band!
