‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘A Complete Unknown’ Leads Oscar Nominations

The 2025 Oscar Nominations are here, and Emilia Pérez, A Complete Unknown, and Conclave are among the most-recognized films this year.

Two musicals—Emilia Pérez and Wicked—are up for Best Picture this year for the first time since 1968. With 13 nominations, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez is just one nod shy of tying the record for most overall nominations for a single film—Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land currently share the title with 14 a piece. Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofia Gascon is also making history as the first openly trans actress to be nominated in the Best Actress category.

For her role as Glinda in Wicked, Ariana Grande is also a first-time Oscar nominee, up for Best Supporting Actress. Her co-star Cynthia Erivo is in the running for Best Actress alongside the likes of Anora’s Mikey Madison and The Substance’s Demi Moore. Erivo is now the second Black actress ever to be nominated twice in the category, following in Viola Davis’ footsteps.

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which stars Timotheé Chalamet in the titular role, is also well-represented across the categories, earning Best Picture and Best Director nominations, as well as a Best Actor nod for Chalamet and Best Supporting Actress for Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez.

Emilia Pérez and Wicked also both picked up Best Original Score nominations, joining The Wild Robot, Conclave and The Brutalist. Best Original Song nominees include Sing Sing’s “Like A Bird,” The Six Triple Eight’s Diane Warren (now a 16-time nominee), a new Elton John track “Never Too Late,” and two songs from Emilia Pérez: “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.” This year, however, the nominees will not be invited to perform live at the ceremony.

The announcement ceremony, hosted by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott, was held on Thursday morning after two delays due to Los Angeles wildfires. The Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2nd at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
