Metric singer Emily Haines is thinking about how her song “Black Sheep” grew into something much bigger than anyone expected. The band has picked the song to close shows on the All the Feelings tour, which returns Friday in Chicago to support their new album, Romanticize the Dive.
Haines says the band was baffled when she first shared the lyrics. Then Edgar Wright was making the Scott Pilgrim movie, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s books. The fictional band The Clash at Demonhead was modeled on Metric, so Wright asked Metric to contribute a song. Metric offered “Black Sheep.” When Wright heard it, he said it fit the scene perfectly.
In the film, Brie Larson plays Envy Adams and sings “Black Sheep,” which pushed the song into a new spotlight. Haines says the song’s journey reminds her of something simple: you can make plans, but you never know what will happen. She likes that. You follow your instincts and keep going, and sometimes things turn into something unexpected.
