Florence + the Machine has released a new song titled “One Of The Greats.” This track will be part of Florence Welch’s upcoming sixth album, Everybody Scream, which is set to drop on October 31. The song comes with a music video directed by Autumn de Wilde.
Florence announced the single on her Instagram on September 22, sharing a photo of herself in sunglasses with an unlit cigarette. She wrote and produced Everybody Scream with a close group of collaborators, including Mark Bowen from IDLES, Aaron Dessner, and Mitski. After undergoing lifesaving surgery during the Dance Fever tour, Florence’s recovery led her to explore themes of spiritual mysticism, witchcraft, and folk horror, reflecting on healing and the limits of her body. The album delves into topics like womanhood, partnership, aging, and death, revealing the beauty in everyday life.
In her statement about “One Of The Greats,” Florence expressed her thoughts on the cost of greatness. She questioned who decides what greatness is and why she feels a constant need for approval. She shared that creating music often feels like a struggle, and she has faced criticism throughout her career for her bold expression.
Florence and Mark Bowen wrote the song in one take, capturing a raw energy that they decided to keep. Aaron Dessner then helped elevate the track to a new level. Florence aimed for the song to evoke a feeling of disintegration, reflecting the ups and downs of the creative process.
