Foo Fighters Achieve 15th No. 1 on Rock Chart, Surpassing Metallica in Record Tie

Foo Fighters have scored their 15th No. 1 hit on the charts with “Asking for a Friend.” This achievement breaks their tie with Metallica, giving them the fourth-most chart-toppers in the history of the chart, which spans 44 years. The song reached the top spot in just five weeks, making it the fastest climb to No. 1 this year. It knocked Five Finger Death Punch’s “The End” out of the top position.

With this latest hit, Five Finger Death Punch now has 17 chart-toppers, placing them ahead of Foo Fighters in the all-time rankings. Shinedown leads all artists with 21 No. 1s, followed by Three Days Grace with 19. Metallica now sits in fifth place with 14 chart-toppers, while Disturbed, Godsmack, Linkin Park, and Van Halen each have 13.

This is Foo Fighters’ first No. 1 since “The Glass” topped the charts for a week in April 2024. Their song “Today’s Song” peaked at No. 2 in August, sandwiched between these two hits. All 15 of Foo Fighters’ No. 1 songs have come in the last 20 years, starting with “Best of You” in 2005.

“Asking for a Friend” is currently at No. 5 on the Alternative Airplay chart. It also holds the top spot on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart for a second week, with 5.9 million audience impressions, according to Luminate.

The song is a standalone single promoting the band’s upcoming 2026 stadium tour, which kicks off next August. It also marks the first release featuring new drummer Ilan Rubin, who joined the band in July. Fans can check out next year’s tour dates soon!
