Frank Zappa’s ‘Apostrophe (‘)’ To Receive 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

Frank Zappa’s landmark album Apostrophe (‘) is getting a super-deluxe edition for its 50th anniversary. The massive 75-track, six-disc re-release of Zappa’s most successful strictly commercial album is due out September 13, and promises bonus live material from concerts in Colorado and Ohio, countless fresh mixes, and precious details from the album’s recording. The new edition of Apostrophe (‘) will also be available for digital download.

Apostrophe (‘), which originally came out in 1974, was Zappa’s first ever certified Gold album and peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Its biggest single “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” found its way to No. 87 on the Hot 100, but Apostrophe (‘) also featured key Zappa tracks like “Cosmic Debris,” “Uncle Remus,” and “Stink-Foot.”

Included in a box set of the Super Deluxe Edition is a 52-page booklet celebrating the album, which features unseen archival stills of album cover photographer Sam Emerson. The booklet also compiles liner notes and essays contributed by veteran British music journalist Simon Prentis and Zappa’s Vaultmeister, Joe Travers.

Ahead of this monumental re-release, a new unreleased take of Zappa’s “Uncle Remus (Piano and Vocal Mix 2024).” The previously unheard version features isolated piano tracks from George Duke, and shines a spotlight on vocal master tracks from FZ and the Ivette’s. Before Apostrophe (‘) hits shelves, one of Zappa’s beloved posthumous compilations will see a new, expanded release: 2016’s Frank Zappa For President will receive its first-ever vinyl wide release on July 19.

“With Apostrophe (‘), Zappa continued to carve out his own genre in music, while celebrating ten years in the business,” Travers shared in a statement. “Nobody sounded like Frank Zappa. This album, and specifically ‘Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow’ brought that unique wonderful sound to the masses in a way that nobody, including Frank, would expect.”
