There was truly no one like Freddie Mercury. His voice, stage presence, and charisma are still unmatched today. It’s heartbreaking that we lost him at just 45 years old in 1991, but his music continues to resonate.
A special three-part YouTube series is now taking a look back at Freddie Mercury’s debut solo album and the story behind it. The series highlights each track on the album and shares interesting stories about those songs.
The final clip in the series features archival footage of Mercury during a 1985 interview with journalist David Wigg. In this interview, Wigg asks Freddie which song he finds most rewarding. Mercury struggles to choose just one, saying, “Oh, I don’t know, the one that sells the most.” He then elaborates, saying, “To me, this is a rewarding album. I think it’s a collection of songs that seem to get in a groove. I couldn’t single out one song because, at this point, I seem to be liking a different song every day.”
Mercury also shares that he considers himself a romantic. “Well, I guess so,” he says, “but I just like writing songs about love because there’s so much scope, and they have so much to do with me.”
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Mercury’s debut solo album, which has been reissued on 180-gram translucent green vinyl. It features a 2019 mix by Queen’s sound team, Justin Shirley-Smith and Joshua J. Macrae.
Though Mercury’s life was cut short, his talent and legacy live on through his music and projects like this YouTube series.
