Green Day’s “American Idiot” made a splash on the Hot Alternative Songs chart after their pre-game show at Super Bowl LX. The band performed before kickoff, focusing on tracks from their iconic album. Fans were thrilled, with one saying, “Green Day certainly show-stopped as the event’s opener.”
While Bad Bunny headlined the halftime show, other artists like Charlie Puth, Kenny G, Brandi Carlile, and Coco Jones also took the stage throughout the night. “American Idiot” landed at No. 12 on the chart, matching its previous peak. Back in November 2023, the song reached this same position.
This week, “American Idiot” was the fifth-highest new entry on the Hot Alternative Songs chart. Best New Artist GRAMMY contender Sombr took the top spot, while two songs by 3 Doors Down charted following the passing of lead singer Brad Arnold. The song also broke into the top 10 on both the Alternative Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales charts, marking Green Day’s seventh top 10 on the alternative list and eighth on rock sales.
Additionally, “American Idiot” hit new highs on other charts, reaching No. 16 on Hot Rock Songs and No. 17 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs. This week was only the second time the song appeared on these rankings.
The American Idiot album also made a comeback, landing at Nos. 18 and 32 on the Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock & Alternative Albums charts. It returned to the Billboard 200 at No. 135.
Another Green Day classic, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” gained traction too, re-entering the Alternative Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales charts at No. 10 and No. 12. Green Day’s music often mixes catchy tunes with political messages, and “American Idiot,” created in 2004, was inspired by events after 9/11 and the Iraq War.
