Downloads of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses shot up by an incredible 12,166 percent after the January 30 premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe in Japan. The classic 1987 song was revealed as the movie’s ending theme, surprising fans since Bandai Namco Filmworks kept it a secret until the film’s release.
On February 2, the company dropped a trailer featuring the song, which quickly gained over one million views. This surge in downloads happened within just nine days after the movie hit theaters, showing how excited fans were about the music choice.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe is the second film in a trilogy based on Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Hathaway’s Flash novels from the late ’80s. The first movie was released in 2021, and fans had to wait five years for this sequel.
In its first eleven days, the new movie has already made over $9.83 million at the box office. Bandai Namco Filmworks has confirmed plans for a worldwide release, but we’re still waiting for premiere dates outside Japan.
Interestingly, the hype for the film has also sparked renewed interest in the song, which is quite remarkable given that it’s 38 years old. It’s not every day that a classic track competes with today’s hits, but “Sweet Child O’ Mine” is proving it still has a place in the spotlight. Keep an eye out for more updates on the movie and the music!
