Iconic Punk Band Commemorates Album Anniversary with Special Vinyl Reissue

The Exploited has released a special red splatter vinyl edition of their classic album *Punks Not Dead* to celebrate 45 years since their debut in 1981. Cherry Red is handling the reissue, which features black vinyl with red splatter and an inner sleeve filled with clippings and memorabilia.

Formed in 1978 in Edinburgh, The Exploited was part of the UK’82 movement, alongside bands like Discharge and Charged G.B.H. These groups brought a new wave of aggressive music that was faster and harder than the original punk scene from 1977. *Punks Not Dead* was released in April 1981, a time when many critics had already declared punk dead. Sid Vicious had passed away, John Lydon was exploring experimental sounds, The Clash was making pop hits, and Sham 69 had disbanded.

The album runs for 37 minutes and includes 15 tracks, featuring the hit “Army Life,” which reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart. Lead singer Wattie Buchan served as a teenage soldier in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, giving songs like “Army Life” a sense of authenticity. The Exploited influenced thrash metal bands such as Slayer and Napalm Death, while their raw energy set them apart from other groups.

The reissue includes tracks that address themes of authority, rebellion, and working-class life. The opening track features sirens and driving drums, while another showcases scratchy guitars backed by Gary McCormack’s bass. Big John Duncan played guitar, and Dru Stix was on drums for the original recording. The band also covered Puncture’s song and created a signature look with mohawks, studded leather, and ripped jeans, defining the punk aesthetic of 1981.

Fans can grab the anniversary edition vinyl now!
