James Brown’s ‘In The Jungle Groove’ For Limited Edition Vinyl

James Brown’s 1986 compilation In The Jungle Groove is to be released in a 2 LP clear translucent vinyl limited edition on October 27. The new format is being issued in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, and brings together many of the Godfather of Soul’s most influential tracks on the genre.

Shop the best of James Brown’s discography on vinyl and more.

Perhaps chief among these is the endlessly-sampled “Funky Drummer,” the 1969 single which had never appeared on an album before this. There are remixes of such hit singles as “Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose” and “Talkin’ Loud & Sayin’ Nothing” and other well-known cuts in the collection include “Soul Power” and “Hot Pants (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants).”

The album title was inspired by a recording that Brown made in August 1970, and which remained largely unreleased, save for its intro, which was added to “It’s A New Day” on In The Jungle Groove. The album’s original appearance came in the year that he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and reaching another new generation of fans with the major, global pop hit “Living In America.”

The tracks on the collection include contributions from such regular collaborators of Brown’s as Maceo Parker, Bobby Byrd, Hearlon “Cheese” Martin, Jimmy “Chank” Nolen, and Alphonso “Country” Kellum. Seattle Weekly’s review of a previous reissue of In The Jungle Groove observed that it “was ordered around a specific period, 1969-71, Brown’s creative summit, but it was also a nod to hip-hop, its 16 minutes of music per vinyl side targeted to scratch DJs who were rediscovering Brown in the mid-’80s.”
