Jessie Ware and Romy have released a new song entitled “Lift You Up.” The duo debuted the song during Ware’s headlining Glastonbury set this past weekend. Romy’s appearance was a surprise for festival-goers, and was met with immediate fanfare. “Lift You Up,” was produced by Stuart Price, who has previously worked with Madonna, Dua Lipa, and Kylie Minogue.
Ware and Romy first met when the xx—Romy’s band with Jamie xx and Oliver Sim—performed under the Westway London. Ware became a fan, and The xx invited her to perform at their Night & Day Festival in Berlin. “I felt like it was such a cool seal of approval—I sang with them on stage and I think from then on Romy and I became friends, she was a fan of my music and I was such a fan of her,” says Ware of meeting Romy.
They have been involved in each other’s work and art ever since. They co-wrote “Share It All,” which came out on Ware’s 2014 album, Tough Love. But “Lift You Up,” is the British duo’s first officially billed collaboration. “It’s a song that’s about both of us being too hard on ourselves, and not believing enough in ourselves. I think anyone can relate to that,” says Ware of the track. “It was amazing to finally work together after many years of friendship,” Romy explains.
“It was so wonderful working with Stuart Price again after we worked so closely on my album,” continues Romy, referencing her critically acclaimed 2023 record Mid Air, “We wanted this song to be uplifting, celebrate togetherness and I can’t think of a better way to share it with everyone than at Glastonbury.”
