Jonny Greenwood, the guitarist for Radiohead, has made a statement about his music from the 2017 film Phantom Thread. He wants a piece of his score removed from the new documentary Melania, which focuses on first lady Melania Trump.
In his statement, Greenwood said, “It has come to our attention that a piece of music from Phantom Thread has been used in the Melania documentary.” He noted that while he doesn’t own the copyright to the score, Universal Pictures did not consult him about this use, which goes against his composer agreement. Because of this, both Greenwood and director Paul Thomas Anderson have requested that the music be taken out of the documentary.
The score for Phantom Thread earned Greenwood his first Oscar nomination and was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Currently, he is nominated for the 2026 Oscars for his work on Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another.
