Rising Nashville singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun tackles the title track off The Who’s classic 1978 album for the official trailer for the new TV series CSI: Vegas.
Oladokun completely makes the track her own and couches it in a modern soundscape while keeping the gritty feeling of the original intact.
After CBS Marketing reached out, Oladokun personally produced, arranged, sang, and recorded the cover to soundtrack the official trailer for CSI: Vegas. The new series premieres on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 (10:00 – 11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and will be available to stream live and on-demand on the CBS app and Paramount+.
It’s been a banner year for the Nigerian-American artist, who released her major-label debut, in defense of my own happiness, to critical acclaim this past June.
Following the album’s release, Oladokun released a special extended edition that included 10 additional songs from her self-released 2020 record, in defense of my own happiness (the beginnings), and one new track, “judas.”
Oladokun also made her NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert debut with a riveting performance, as well as appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and performed her song “sunday” at Nashville’s newly opened National Museum of African American Music
This isn’t the first time Oladokun’s music has garnered national attention thanks to a key TV sync. Her song “breathe again,” appeared on the hit NBC show This Is Us, propelling the track to reach No.3 on Shazam’s US Top 200 while also charting globally
The new album finds Oladokun forging her own path, sharing the unique perspective she’s gained from living in today’s world as a black, queer woman and first-generation child of Nigerian immigrants. Born in Arizona and now living in Nashville, her musical exploration began at age 10 when she was inspired to learn guitar after seeing a video of Tracy Chapman—the first time she’d ever seen a black woman play the instrument.
Furthering her breakout year, Oladokun will tour throughout the fall including performances at Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, and Austin City Limits as well as several dates supporting Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Dermot Kennedy. See below for the complete itinerary.
