This year’s MTV Video Music Awards is shaping up to be one of the best, with plenty of newcomers on the line-up and pop veterans returning, including Justin Bieber.
This marks the first time in six years the global pop star will perform at the VMAs after delivering a moving performance of “What Do You Mean?” in 2015.
Bieber leads this year’s VMAs nominations with seven nods, including two of the night’s biggest awards, “Video of the Year” and “Artist of the Year.”
Continuing to dominate 2021, Bieber brings the biggest collaborations across all genres – most recently, “Essence” Remix with WizKid & Tems and “Don’t Go” with Skrillex and Don Toliver.
Joining Bieber is also Kacey Musgraves, making her VMAs debut to perform the title track off her highly anticipated new album, star-crossed.
Doja Cat will both perform and host, along with additional performances by Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo, Shawn Mendes, and many others.
This year’s VMAS will also include a new award, the US Global Icon Award, and the first recipients will be the Foo Fighters.
The honor, which originally began during the annual MTV Europe Music Award for Global Icon, is being awarded to Dave Grohl and his because their “unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond.”
Along with a star-studded line-up, this year also sees the VMAS return to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in front of a live studio audience, on Sunday, September 12 at 8 PM ET/PT on MTV.
While Lady Gaga managed to make last year’s live-streamed awards feel like an electrifying live show, this year’s live event is sure to deliver some surprising performances and the return of the red carpet.
